Written Methods Video Support Materials
Following discussions with staff, one area of Maths that parents have requested clarification on is how written methods for addition, subtraction , multiplication and division are taught in school. In 2007, New Oscott worked as part of a network of schools to create clips explaining how methods are taught to children relating to the four operations.
Addition
In this section, you will find videos exploring how addition is taught in school. These videos explore how addition is carried out using a number line, by partitioning (Breaking down numbers into component parts - e.g. 23 is made up of 2 tens and 3 units) as well as more compact methods that involve carrying.
Addition using a Number Line
This video explores how a Number line is used when teaching addition in school.
Addition Using Partitioning
This video explores how addition using partitioning is taught in school.
Column Addition
This video explores how column addition is taught in school.
Subtraction
In this section, you will find videos exploring how subtraction is taught in school. These videos explore how subtractionis carried out using a hundred square, a number line as well as more compact methods that involve decomposition (Breaking down numbers).
Subtraction using a Hundred Square
This video explores how a hundred square is used when teaching subtraction in school.
Subtraction using a Number Line
This video explores how a number line is used when teaching subtraction in school.
Column Subtraction
This video explores how more compact methods, such as column subtraction with decomposition are taught in school.
Multiplication
Below you will find a video exploring how grid multiplication is taught in school.
Division
Below you will find videos exploring how division is taught in school by using a number line as well as a video exploring more compact methods called the 'bus stop' method.
Compact Multiplication
This video explores how multiplication can be recorded using more compact method. Please note that this video explores multiplying a 2-digit number by a 1 digit number (e.g. 23 x 6) as well as a 2 by 2 digit number (e.e. 23x16).
Division
Below you will find videos exploring how division is taught in school by using a number line as well as a video exploring more compact methods called the 'bus stop' method.
Division Using a Number Line
